Literacy

Reading Garden

Our reading garden was created to give our 50 children a safe, inspiring space to learn. With books across many genres, interests, and reading levels, children can build their reading skills, improve comprehension, and develop a genuine love for books—another powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and violence. Thanks to the generosity of a special donor, Holli from Hicksville, New York, children who complete ten books earn a “reading buddy”—a stuffed animal that keeps them company while they read and complete their activities.

Learning

Learning Through Play

Once a week, our children come together to play games that strengthen critical thinking, concentration, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. These activities can be enjoyed with a friend, in small groups, or in larger competitions. Our game collection currently includes Connect Four, chess, Rummikub, and a variety of puzzles. Through these games, we aim to foster teamwork, creativity, patience, self-control, and negotiation skills.Without screens or online games, children learn to interact face-to-face, build friendships, and develop the social skills that will support them throughout their lives.

Danza

Dance

Thanks to a very special donor, Gloria Cárdenas of Colombia, 20 of our students now receive free dance classes—fulfilling their request to add another form of art to our program. In the video, you’ll see our children dancing Joropo, a traditional folk music and dance style native to Los Llanos (The Plains) in Colombia, which is also where our foundation is located. Joropo is a cultural treasure of the region and an important part of its identity.

Future programs

English (ESL)

English as a Second Language (ESL)
We hope to introduce English as a Second Language using online programs that are both effective and age-appropriate. With Chromebooks and program subscriptions, our children can gain valuable language skills that open future opportunities. For example, Lingokids offers a family plan for about $72 per year for four children—an accessible and impactful resource.

Sewing

Sewing Classes
Our sewing program would teach children of all levels—from learning to hem and adjust their own clothing to designing and creating their own pieces. This can be achieved with sewing machines, fabric, and a teacher’s salary, giving students both confidence and practical skills.
